What's in my bag: 6 essentials you
can Never Leave the House Without

If you peek inside my handbag—it’s not glamorous, but it’s me. Over the years I’ve whittled it down to the must‑haves: the things I truly never leave home without. Whether I’m running errands, heading to a meeting, or sneaking out for brunch, these items go with me every time.

Here are the 6 handbag essentials I swear by (and why they’re non‑negotiable).

1. Phone + Slim Portable Charger

Your phone is your lifeline—and a dead battery can ruin your day. A slim power bank ensures you stay connected during long days out. Honestly, what’s worse than your phone dying? That’s what I thought. I prefer a magnetic or ultra slim model that tucks neatly in a pocket so it doesn’t bulk up my bag.

2. Wallet / Cardholder + Emergency Cash

Cards, ID, and some hidden cash for when digital payments fail or places don’t accept cards — this is foundational. I use a compact cardholder to minimize bulk, with a few bills tucked in a separate slot.

3. Lip Balm / Lipstick + Compact Mirror

I may have minimal makeup in my bag, but lip balm or a nude lipstick is a must. Between dry lips, eating out, or midday freshening, it’s a subtle way to feel put together. A tiny mirror helps with last-minute checks. I aim for multipurpose or dual-use items: a tinted balm instead of both lip balm + lipstick.

4. Hand Sanitizer + Tissues / Wet Wipes

Hygiene is non-negotiable. A small hand sanitizer or gel keeps you covered after touching public surfaces. Wipes or tissues handle spills, messes, or quick freshen-ups. I keep mine in a small pouch so they don’t leak or mess up other contents.

5. Hair Tie / Clip + Spare (Optional) Accessory

When your hair starts misbehaving, a hair tie saves the day. Also, a spare accessory like a small earring, bobby pin, or compact comb can come in useful.

6. Sunglasses / Eyewear + Case

Sun glare can ruin your eyes (and your mood). Whether you keep sunglasses or a spare pair of prescription lenses, they’re lifesavers for bright days or driving. I always use a slim, protective case so they don’t scratch the inside of my bag.

Remember this is all about covering the basics, the essentials, the non-negotiables, everything after that depends on the size of your bag and if you can carry more.
